Decorating like a Pro...crastinator?

Posted by Renee Michel on

DECORATING...A word that can strike fear into the hearts of many.  It has caused men and women alike to run in fear of the dreaded Furniture Store, of picking the wrong item, or having it look terrible once placed in your home.

It's okay, you can rest easy now.  We're here for you...like your childhood blankie, or like your favorite pair of old jeans.  You just sit back and relax, we've got this!

Why do we have such a fear of selecting furniture for our homes?  Well for myself, I grew up in a world where everyone's home looked the same.  Everyone had a 3 seater sofa, matching loveseat and chair, all done in the same neutral colors as the matching rug, lamps and drapes.  If patterns, and colors existed at all in this parallel reality, they were muted and monochromatic.  As a creative soul who loves all kinds of colors and textures, this dull, monotonous way of thinking needed to be invigorated...like a lot...and that's when I realized it was easy to start re-decorating...you just had to do it and think outside the proverbial box.

If you're a beginner, start small.  Toss cushions, prints, throws, any accessory really, is the most budget-friendly way to start practicing your new craft :)  If you're into bright, saturated colors, you'll want to add a little texture to your room, think wool ottoman, shag area rug, silk toss cushions.  You'll be amazed at what an impact such relatively small changes can create.

The biggest decorating hurtle you might encounter is the age-old problem of decorating for two.  This can turn any beginner into a decorating procrastinator. One wants House and Home and the other want comfy, overstuffed lounging furniture.  Now who needs something else to argue about?  I know I don't, so I figured out a solution...you get both!  Seriously, with all the options available to you these days, you can get the best of both worlds.  You can easily take reclining furniture and stationary furniture and match the arm styles and coverings so they will blend seamlessly together in your space and be worthy of that magazine cover...if only you could get him out of his recliner long enough to take the picture :)

If working with color is your nemesis, let me let you in on a little secret...you can let someone else do the work for you.  Go out and choose a print for your room, one that incorporates that color you love so much.  Voila, now the hard part is done.  Pretty easy right?  Now you can use all the other colors in that print as secondary colors in your space, a throw here, a vase there, a few pillows and suddenly you're a decorating pro, no experience required!

Okay...now don't panic...I didn't say I was leaving you.  Just because I let you in on my little secrets doesn't mean I won't still be here for you.  If that D word we do not speak of still causes you nausea and dizziness, and makes you want to run and hide, just run to Arctic, we'll be here for you, as always, to help you through the whole process...just like that childhood blankie, or that favorite pair of ripped jeans :)
